As Braamfontein in Johannesburg benefits from an urban renewal programme, the Devonshire Hotel, one of the oldest in the area, is being renovated, refurbished and revitalized. With a heritage dating back to the 1930s, the Dev began its latest refurbishment programme in March. The first phase saw the renovation of all public areas on the first and second floors and the reception area.
This included the upgrade of sound and video equipment in conference facilities, furniture, artwork and other décor and new restaurant facilities with modern kitchen equipment. The second stage will see upgrading of room-colour schemes, beds, fixtures and furniture. Concurrently with room upgrades, ablution facilities will also be modernised. Franz Gmeiner’s Orion group, which owns and manages the hotel, says it is on its way to becoming one of the trendiest establishments in the Johannesburg CBD.
The revitalization of Braamfontein has been under way for much of the past decade. Buildings have been refurbished and streets and lighting have been improved and this has attracted business back to the area. As a result, restaurants have grown in number and quality and the Devonshire has opened 34 on Melle to capitalize on the revival of fortunes in Braamfontein.
